Labour Introduces Landmark Bill to Protect UK Elections from Foreign Interference
Labour has introduced the Representation of the People Bill, delivering sweeping reforms designed to safeguard British democracy from foreign interference while expanding voting rights to 16 and 17-year-olds across the UK.
The legislation represents one of the most significant overhauls of political finance rules in recent years. It strengthens requirements on company donations, introduces new “Know Your Donor” guidance, and tightens oversight of unincorporated associations — measures aimed at preventing so-called “dodgy front companies” from influencing UK politics.
Alongside enhanced transparency and accountability, the Bill will extend the right to vote in all UK elections to 1.7 million young people aged 16 and 17. The move fulfils a clear Labour manifesto commitment and ensures reforms are in place before the next General Election.
The legislation also introduces new protections for candidates, campaigners and electoral staff to guard against abuse and intimidation during election periods.
Labour says the reforms will keep British democracy secure and ensure political power remains in the hands of the British people.
