Labour Government Launches £5 Billion “Pride in Place” Programme to Restore Local Communities
The Labour government has unveiled the nationwide Pride in Place programme, pledging a record £5 billion of investment to support more than 330 local communities across the UK.
The initiative marks the largest transfer of power from Whitehall to local areas in history, giving communities unprecedented powers to seize boarded-up shops, save derelict pubs, and block gambling and vape shops on their high streets.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the programme would empower local people to restore pride in their neighbourhoods and breathe new life into high streets. The plan includes £214 million for Welsh communities and £292 million for Scottish neighbourhoods as part of targeted funding to improve local areas.
Communities will be able to directly shape the future of their high streets through the new Plan for Change, which Labour hopes will spark economic revival and social cohesion across towns and cities.
