One of Labour’s most heartfelt manifesto pledges has become reality as the Prime Minister confirmed the passing of the Hillsborough Law.
After decades of campaigning by bereaved families, the new legislation introduces a legal Duty of Candour for public officials, backed by criminal sanctions for those who mislead the public.
It also creates a new offence for public authorities that conceal the truth, ensuring tragedies like Hillsborough, Orgreave, Windrush, Horizon, the infected blood scandal and Grenfell are never repeated.
In addition, there will be non-means tested legal aid for bereaved families at inquests – the largest expansion of legal aid in a decade.
Labour has made clear: truth must never again be concealed by the state.
