Kim Johnson renews call for action on IPP sentences

Commons Library figures show 856 unreleased IPP prisoners were in custody in June, with only three yet to reach their tariff date.

Labour MP Kim Johnson has renewed calls for action on imprisonment for public protection sentences, which were abolished for new cases in 2012 but not retrospectively for people already serving them.

House of Commons Library figures show that, on 30 June 2026, 856 unreleased IPP prisoners were in custody and only three had not reached their tariff date. A further 1,415 recalled prisoners brought the total in custody to 2,271. The Government has said it intends to legislate to end the sentences by the end of this Parliament.
