Karin Smyth confirms targeted autumn consultation on GMC reform

The health minister says further proposals will address parts of the draft order, including issues raised by Lord Mann's review of racism in healthcare regulation.

Karin Smyth has confirmed that the government intends to hold a further targeted consultation this autumn on parts of the proposed General Medical Council legislative framework.

The Department of Health and Social Care is still analysing responses to its wider consultation on reforming the GMC's legal framework.

The additional exercise will focus on certain aspects of the draft General Medical Council Order. It will include proposals related to Lord Mann's review of antisemitism and other forms of racism in the NHS and the healthcare regulatory system.

Ministers plan to publish a combined response covering both consultations after that work has been completed. Smyth did not give a date for the final response or for legislation.

The announcement therefore marks a further evidence-gathering stage rather than a settled change to the regulator's powers or procedures.

Smyth is the Minister of State for Health with responsibility for secondary care. She gave the timetable in a written parliamentary answer published on 16 October.
