James Naish has asked the Government whether its proposed water-sector reforms will include protections for recreational water users.

The Labour MP for Rushcliffe tabled the named-day written question on 9 October. The environment department is due to answer by 16 October.
Naish’s question focuses on public health and asks whether people who swim, paddle or take part in other recreation will receive explicit protection in the reform package.
The wording does not establish that ministers have agreed a particular safeguard. It seeks a commitment before the detailed shape of the reforms is settled.
The answer will indicate whether recreational exposure to polluted water is being treated as a distinct public-health issue within the Government’s water programme.
