Labour MP James Asser has joined Newham Mayor Forhad Hussain and local councillors to open the new Green Street Library, praising the Labour-run council for investing in libraries.

The MP for West Ham and Beckton attended the opening of the library on Green Street, one of east London's best-known high streets, this weekend.
James Asser: 'Key community assets'
He said: "Libraries are key community assets for study, meetings, community groups & reading for young & old alike."
He added: "Wonderful to see Newham investing in new libraries."
The opening was attended by Mayor Forhad Hussain, councillors and a special guest, broadcaster and maths teacher Bobby Seagull.
Investing in local services
Libraries have faced closures and reduced hours across the country in recent years as councils have come under financial pressure. Newham's decision to open a new library has been welcomed by campaigners who argue that libraries provide vital free space for study, digital access, job seeking and community activity.
Green Street, in the Upton Park area, is home to a large and diverse community, and the new library is intended to serve residents of all ages.
A busy weekend in the constituency
James Asser also visited Royal Docks Watersports over the weekend, meeting the chair of the Typhoon Dragon Boat Club to discuss how to get more local young people using facilities on their doorstep.
The MP, a former Newham councillor and cabinet member, was elected in 2024. He has campaigned on transport links in his constituency, including the proposed extension of the Docklands Light Railway to Thamesmead.
