Jack Abbott has secured a commitment from the Prime Minister that co-operative principles will be placed at the heart of the planned National Care Service.

The Labour and Co-operative MP raised the experience of his grandparents and argued that social care should put people before profit.

Andy Burnham told the Commons that successive parties had failed to fix the care system and repeated his commitment to create a national service.

He said the path to that service would be shaped by co-operative principles, giving Abbott a clear policy commitment at Prime Minister's Questions.

Burnham also said he would arrange another round of cross-party talks on social care, hopefully within a month and in any event before the end of the year.

The exchange established a principle for the future service. It did not set out its funding model, timetable, legal structure or the precise role of co-operative providers.
