The Commons Treasury Committee, chaired by Labour MP Dame Meg Hillier, will take evidence from leading economists on 14 October as part of its scrutiny of the Government’s 2026 Budget.

The committee has scheduled its first public oral evidence session for 2.15pm, with three witnesses expected to give their assessments of the economic and financial outlook.
The witnesses
They include Lord Jim O’Neill, the economist and former Commercial Secretary to the Treasury, alongside Dr Peder Beck-Friis of investment management company PIMCO.
Professor Anna Valero, director of the Growth Programme at the London School of Economics’ Centre for Economic Performance and a former adviser to Rachel Reeves, is also scheduled to appear.
Scrutinising the Treasury
The evidence session is part of the committee’s role in examining Treasury policy, economic management and the implications of government decisions for the public finances.
Hillier, the Labour MP for Hackney South and Shoreditch, has chaired the Treasury Committee since September 2024. The committee operates on a cross-party basis and is responsible for scrutinising the Treasury and associated public bodies.
The session will allow MPs to question expert witnesses before the committee draws any conclusions or makes recommendations.
