North Lanarkshire Council published the results on 8 October. Its Trading Standards team led the project on behalf of the West of Scotland Safety Working Group.

Officers inspected 165 retail and wholesale premises and 32,316 toys. They found 18,075 toys to be unsafe or non-compliant, more than half of those checked.

Small parts that could detach were among the main hazards identified. Some toys also failed chemical safety tests or lacked required traceability information.

Loughran, the Labour councillor for Thorniewood and convener of the Environment and Climate Change Committee, said the findings demonstrated the importance of coordinated consumer protection.

The working group will use the results to strengthen compliance throughout supply chains. Further Scottish toy-safety work is continuing, with additional findings expected later in the year.
