Great Yarmouth maintenance workers plan two-day strike over terms, Unite says

Sharon Graham says around 40 council workers have the union's backing in a dispute over conditions following the return of their jobs in-house.

Around 40 Great Yarmouth Borough Council maintenance workers plan to strike on 19 and 20 October in a dispute over their terms and conditions, Unite has announced.

The workers transferred from contractor Norse to the council two years ago. Unite says they have yet to receive the working hours, leave entitlements and recognition of continuous service it believes should apply following that transfer.

General secretary Sharon Graham said the workers provided an essential service and had Unite’s full support. The union is seeking a standard 37-hour week without a pay reduction, recognition of service accrued with Norse, and a timetable to settle outstanding terms.

Unite expects delays to repairs and maintenance of council properties during the proposed walkout. It says industrial action can still be avoided through talks. The council’s response to the union’s latest claims had not been identified when this story was drafted.
