Government announces £10.5bn plan to boost flood defences for deprived communities
The government has unveiled sweeping reforms to England’s flood defence programme, pledging a record £10.5 billion investment to protect homes and businesses from flooding — with a focus on supporting the most deprived areas.
Under the new rules, all prioritised flood projects valued at £3 million or less will be fully funded by the government. Larger projects will receive full funding for the first £3 million and 90% of costs beyond that.
The new framework, which will take effect from April 2026, is expected to protect nearly 900,000 properties across England.
At least 20% of future investment will be directed specifically toward helping deprived communities over the next decade, ensuring that flood resilience becomes a key part of the government’s wider renewal agenda.
