Gary Godden welcomes 40% fall in youth antisocial behaviour in Nottingham city centre

Nottinghamshire's Labour and Co-operative police and crime commissioner has credited a coordinated enforcement and prevention operation for a reduction of more than 40% in youth antisocial behaviour.

The programme brings together Nottinghamshire Police, Nottingham City Council, the commissioner's office and other partners. Measures include high-visibility patrols, targeted operations, enhanced CCTV, dedicated SafeTravel officers and the commissioner-funded Angel Row Help Point.

The figures were published one month after a restriction on face coverings linked to crime and antisocial behaviour came into force on 15 September. Police have reported fewer people using balaclavas to conceal their identity while causing trouble.

Godden said the early results reflected the combined effect of enforcement, prevention, partnership working and practical investment, rather than any single measure.

Police said 41 young people were on a city-centre watchlist and eight were subject to banning orders as part of bail conditions. No £70 fines had yet been issued under the face-covering restriction.

The restriction is not a blanket ban and includes exemptions for legitimate religious, health, medical and work-related reasons. Godden said partners would continue building on the fall in reported incidents.
