The Building Safety Regulator will publish a call for evidence later this month on Part K of the Building Regulations and the statutory guidance explaining how to comply with it.

Part K covers features including stairs, ladders, ramps, handrails, guarding, windows, doors, glazing and vehicle barriers in and around buildings.

The review will seek evidence on gaps, problems and possible improvements. It follows government-commissioned research published in October 2025 on domestic stair design, including step dimensions, consistency and handrail provision.

Eshalomi said responses would inform consideration of whether changes to the regulations or guidance are justified. The statement does not announce amended standards, and no change will take effect merely because the evidence exercise has opened.

The Building Safety Regulator has a duty to keep building standards and risks to people under review. Ministers say the exercise is intended to support that work and put residents' experience at the centre of any future decisions.

Eshalomi is the Minister of State for Homelessness, Democracy, Communities and Faith. The regulator, rather than the minister personally, will run the evidence-gathering process.
