Ed Miliband has expressed his condolences to those affected by a devastating earthquake in Indonesia, as British nationals in the region are urged to follow local authorities and UK travel advice.
Writing on X on Saturday evening, Miliband said his thoughts were with people affected by the disaster, particularly families who had lost loved ones.
He said:
“My thoughts are with everyone affected by the devastating earthquake in Indonesia, including all those who have lost loved ones.
“British nationals in the region should follow the advice of the local authorities and UK travel advice.”
The earthquake has prompted concern for communities in the affected region as authorities assess the extent of the damage and emergency services respond.
Miliband also shared the Government’s Indonesia travel advice, which provides information for British nationals travelling or living in the country.
Indonesia sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” and regularly experiences earthquakes and volcanic activity because of its location along several tectonic plate boundaries.
The UK Government advises British nationals in areas affected by natural disasters to follow instructions issued by local authorities and keep up to date with official travel guidance as circumstances can change quickly.
Miliband’s statement adds to messages of sympathy and solidarity following the earthquake, with attention now focused on those affected and the work of emergency responders.
British nationals currently in Indonesia are being encouraged to monitor official advice and remain alert to further updates from local authorities and the UK Government.
