Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband has reaffirmed Britain’s solidarity with Germany following Berlin’s conclusion that Russia was responsible for an attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport, warning that the UK will work closely with allies to defend European security.
Writing on X following talks with his German counterpart, Miliband said:
“The UK stands in total solidarity with Germany in the face of Russia’s egregious and unacceptable attack in Leipzig.”
He added that Britain was “working closely with our allies to defend against any threats to their national security”.
The intervention follows Germany’s announcement that it holds Russia responsible for an attempted attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport on 4 August. German authorities said an explosives-laden drone was discovered close to Ukrainian cargo aircraft and defused before it could cause damage.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul described the incident as part of a wider pattern of alleged Russian hybrid operations across Europe, encompassing sabotage, destabilisation and disinformation. Germany has responded with measures including the planned closure of the Russian Consulate General in Bonn, termination of the lease of the Russian House in Berlin and proposals for further European sanctions.
Russia has denied responsibility and described Germany’s allegations as fabricated.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has also backed Germany, saying the UK stands in “full solidarity” with Berlin and warning that attempts to weaken European support for Ukraine would fail. In a statement issued by No 10, he described the Leipzig incident as an “egregious and reckless attack”.
Miliband joined European and international counterparts in Ireland on Wednesday for talks focused partly on Russian hybrid threats and continued support for Ukraine. Speaking around the meeting, he said Britain’s own experience of Russian activity demonstrated the need for allies to remain united.
The Foreign Secretary’s comments underline Labour’s determination to maintain close cooperation with Britain’s European and NATO partners as governments respond to growing concerns over threats to critical infrastructure and national security.
With Germany pushing for further action against individuals and organisations linked to hybrid attacks, the latest incident is expected to intensify discussions among European allies about strengthening deterrence while continuing their support for Ukraine.
