Writing on 10 October, the former homelessness charity chief executive backed the Prime Minister's drive to offer people sleeping rough a route off the streets by Christmas.

Smith said accommodation was essential but could not, on its own, resolve the trauma and other difficulties that had contributed to someone losing their home.

He called for agencies to share information more accurately, follow people moving between council areas and coordinate support from services such as education, health and social care.

The North Northumberland MP said the national homelessness plan was a positive start, while arguing that sustained cooperation and patience would be needed to help people rebuild their lives.
