Labour MP Darren Paffey has written to the Southampton Green Party asking its elected representatives to distance themselves from the policy adopted at their national conference declaring Zionism to be racism.

In the letter, published on 9 October, Paffey said local representatives had a responsibility to explain where they stood following criticism from Jewish communal organisations.
He also asked councillors who attended the conference to say whether they participated in the vote and, if so, how they voted.
Paffey said criticism of the Israeli government and its actions was legitimate, but must not become a justification for questioning Jewish people's identity or equal participation in British public life.
The Southampton Itchen MP called for a clear public response and said all political representatives shared a responsibility to ensure Jewish residents felt safe, respected and welcome in the city.
