Abdi-Wali is the leader of Camden Council and has represented Camden Square as a councillor since 2022. She previously held responsibility for housing, giving her experience of one of the central issues facing local residents.

Abdi-Wali: ‘This place welcomed my family’

In Labour’s announcement of her candidacy, she described her ambition to serve the community that welcomed her family.

“This place welcomed my family as refugees and gave us hope when we needed it most,” she said.

The by-election follows Starmer’s resignation as the constituency’s MP. Abdi-Wali is among 15 candidates standing to succeed him, with her campaign emphasising her record of local service and commitment to Camden’s communities.

Polling stations will open from 7am to 10pm on 8 October.
