CWU calls for government intervention after Royal Mail job-cut announcement

The union says around 200 jobs it represents could be affected by Royal Mail's wider plan to cut 2,500 posts.

The Communication Workers Union has urged the government to intervene after Royal Mail announced plans to cut 2,500 jobs as part of an organisational review.

Martin Walsh, the CWU’s deputy general secretary for postal workers, said the union had been reassured that frontline workers would not be affected and that there would be no compulsory redundancies. He said the proposals would nevertheless affect approximately 200 CWU-represented jobs in administration and revenue protection.

The union plans to meet Royal Mail management to discuss the announcement. Walsh criticised the company’s treatment of staff and its service to customers, and called on ministers to help protect the postal service.

The CWU’s response puts the effect on workers at the centre of the proposed changes, even where jobs are expected to go through voluntary departures or other arrangements. Its talks with management have yet to establish what will happen to the affected staff.
