Crewe & Nantwich Athletics Club has secured almost £500,000 to refurbish the athletics track at the Cumberland Arena in Crewe, using investment from Crewe Town Council through the Government’s Towns Fund.

The club has operated from the Cumberland Arena since 1981. The venue is the only athletics track in South Cheshire and supports around 260 members across junior and senior sections, with athletes competing at county, national and international level.

Significant wear and tear has meant the club has been unable to host events at the arena for the past two years. Without resurfacing, organisers warned the track would fail certification required to hold competitions from early next year.

Connor Naismith MP has supported the club since his election as Member of Parliament for Crewe & Nantwich. He raised the issue in his first Parliamentary question in October 2024 and has worked with local councillors Hazel Faddes, Jill Rhodes and Martin Edwards to identify funding.

Following discussions with Crewe Town Board, Crewe Town Council committed to supporting the refurbishment. As the only athletics track in South Cheshire, the upgraded facility is expected to attract athletes from across the local area and allow the club to resume hosting regional events in Crewe.

Connor Naismith MP said:

“I’m really happy for Clair and the rest of the Crewe & Nantwich Athletics Club that we’ve been able to get this over the line.

“The club has supported generations of athletes at the Cumberland site and this new funding will ensure they’ll continue to do so into the future. I look forward to seeing the Crewe & Nantwich Athletics Club returning to hosting track events as soon as possible.”

Cheshire East Council and Crewe Town Board have published further details of the investment in a joint statement.
