Clean Energy Boom to Create 400,000 New Jobs by 2030, Government Says
The government has announced its first national plan for what it calls the "clean energy mission," forecasting it will create over 400,000 extra jobs by the end of the decade.
The strategy identifies 31 priority occupations where demand will be highest, including roles for plumbers, electricians, and welders.
To train the next generation of workers, five new "Technical Excellence Colleges" will be established, specialising in clean energy sectors. The move is part of the government's wider aim for two-thirds of young people to be in higher-level education or training.
The Energy Secretary is also set to introduce measures requiring companies that receive public grants or contracts to demonstrate they are providing "good jobs" across the clean energy sector.
Ministers said the plan would ensure "a generation of young people across Britain" could benefit from the high wages and employment opportunities generated by the transition to renewable and nuclear power.
The announcement forms a key part of the government's stated ambition to establish the UK as a "clean energy superpower."
The full details of the strategy are expected to be published and outlined in Parliament later today.
