Chris Bryant blocks Drumcree procession after police safety warning

The Labour MP for Rhondda and Ogmore and Northern Ireland Secretary acted after the PSNI Chief Constable made a request under section 9 of the Public Processions (Northern Ireland) Act 1998.

Bryant said the Chief Constable advised that enabling the procession would require a major police intervention carrying an unacceptable risk of serious injury, disorder and tensions spreading elsewhere in Northern Ireland.

He reviewed the Parades Commission's original determination, consulted the commission and made an order under section 11. Bryant stressed that the Portadown District Loyal Orange Lodge had received lawful permission and thanked its representatives for peaceful co-operation with police.

The Secretary of State called for protests, rallies and demonstrations to be stood down. He said he would continue working with both sides after two weeks of unsuccessful talks, including negotiations at Hillsborough Castle.
