Bus fares in England outside London will be capped at £2 from 1 January to 31 December 2027, helping people save up to a third on everyday journeys to work, education, healthcare and leisure.
The Prime Minister said cheaper travel was part of a wider effort to give families breathing space on the cost of living while supporting public transport networks that connect communities across the country.
Government said the cap would make bus travel more affordable at a time when many households remain under pressure from rising everyday costs, particularly in areas where car ownership is not an option for every journey.
The policy builds on devolved experience in Greater Manchester, where integrated transport and fare initiatives have been central to the Bee Network and regional Labour leadership.
Writing for LBC, Andy Burnham argued that a fairer bus fare was “just the start” of a broader programme to improve connectivity and opportunity outside London.
Labour Home will follow the rollout of the fare cap as operators and local transport authorities prepare for implementation from the start of 2027.
