Labour-run Brighton & Hove City Council has today launched an ambitious Seafront Investment Prospectus, setting out a clear, long-term vision to create a vibrant, accessible and sustainable waterfront fit for the future.
Stretching 13 kilometres, Brighton & Hove’s seafront is one of the UK’s most iconic coastal destinations, supporting tourism, culture, community life and a diverse local economy. The new prospectus brings together current projects and future opportunities into a single, coordinated framework to guide regeneration and unlock investment.
It responds to the pressing challenges facing coastal cities – from ageing infrastructure to climate change – while protecting the character and heritage that residents value most.
Councillor Bella Sankey, Leader of Brighton & Hove City Council, said:
“As a proud Brightonian, I know that our seafront is one of Brighton & Hove’s most cherished assets. It shapes how people experience our city and plays a vital role in our community and economy.
Our Labour administration has set out a vision for the future of the seafront. This prospectus sets out how we will steward the seafront for the long term – bringing together our values of inclusivity, sustainability and place. It shows how investment can raise quality, improve access, support local businesses and ensure the seafront works for residents and visitors all year round.”
The prospectus identifies key opportunities across the seafront, including major regeneration sites such as Black Rock. Here, there is the potential to create a landmark modern art gallery or cultural destination that reflects Brighton & Hove’s international reputation as a creative city. Set within a unique coastal landscape, a new gallery could draw visitors year-round, support the local economy and complement existing cultural venues along the seafront.
This builds on significant progress already underway – from Hove Beach Park and Madeira Terrace restoration to improved active travel routes and new leisure infrastructure.
Lord Bassam, Chair of the Seafront Development Board, said:
“Brighton & Hove’s seafront is a critical economic asset and presents a significant opportunity for the city and its residents. This prospectus provides the clarity, confidence and strategic direction investors are looking for.
“This is about creating new opportunities for local talent to develop, with jobs and employment in Brighton & Hove’s fastest growing sector - the arts, culture, hospitality.”
“If we get it right, it will be about more than just new facilities - the jobs and creative opportunities will provide a fresh start for young people from diverse backgrounds.”
Through partnership between the public and private sectors, the council is setting a clear course to deliver a high-quality, resilient and distinctive seafront for generations to come.
Councillor Jacob Taylor, Deputy Leader of the Council, said:
“This is a really important moment for the city and its seafront. In the next 5 years we have a chance to create the most iconic and spectacular stretch of coastline in the whole country – with arts, attractions, leisure, and natural shorefront to rival the best seaside resorts in Europe.”
“Most people have heard of Brighton & Hove and its beach, and many have visited for work or leisure. But we have a chance to take it to the next level – to create a strategically connected seafront that becomes a major national and international attraction.”
