Defence minister Calvin Bailey has told Parliament that 1,250 of the military homes most urgently needing improvement have already been upgraded, with further work under way this year.
The Minister for Veterans and People gave the update in a written parliamentary answer published on 6 October, responding to a question about accommodation sites requiring urgent repairs.
£9.2 billion over the next decade
Bailey said the Defence Investment Plan confirmed an existing commitment of £9.2 billion over the next decade to deliver the Defence Housing Strategy and renew military family housing, and reiterated the Government’s ambition to modernise or rebuild nine out of ten military homes.
He also reported that the Ministry of Defence’s latest housing satisfaction research showed 75 per cent of families were satisfied with their accommodation, an increase of 12 percentage points on the previous year.
Bailey, the Labour MP for Leyton and Wanstead, acknowledged that considerable work remained to bring the wider accommodation estate up to an acceptable standard.
