Turley said the money will support work to transform some of the council’s highest-cost services, including special educational needs and disabilities provision, adult social care and children’s social care.

She said:

“Great news for Redcar & Cleveland Council and our communities, with the Government confirming £4.8 million in additional funding for our area.”

Turley added that the services concerned place significant pressure on council finances and said the investment should help improve outcomes for residents while supporting longer-term financial stability.

Support for councils under pressure

Local authorities across England have faced rising costs in social care and SEND provision, with demand increasing sharply in many areas.

The Government’s multi-year local government settlement includes billions of pounds in additional funding for councils, including extra support for adult social care and children’s social care reform. Ministers have said the aim is to give councils greater certainty and allow them to shift spending towards earlier intervention and more sustainable services.

Redcar and Cleveland is also receiving additional support through the Government’s Recovery Grant arrangements, which are targeted at authorities facing some of the greatest financial pressures.

Focus on SEND and social care

Turley said the £4.8 million package would be particularly important in helping the council reshape expensive services rather than simply meeting immediate costs.

SEND, adult social care and children’s social care are among the areas creating the greatest financial pressure for councils nationally.

The Government has already committed additional funding to adult social care over the coming years and £2.4 billion for children’s social care reform through the multi-year settlement, with a greater emphasis on prevention and early support for families.

Turley pledges to keep pressing Redcar’s case

Turley said she would continue making sure the needs of Redcar and Cleveland were understood “at the highest levels of Government”.

She also thanked Redcar and Cleveland Council and its officers for developing the plans underpinning the additional support.

“I look forward to seeing this funding make a real difference for residents across Redcar & Cleveland.”

Her intervention reflects a wider Labour emphasis on giving councils greater financial certainty while helping authorities reform services that have become increasingly costly.

For Turley, the £4.8 million represents both immediate support for residents and an opportunity to make essential local services more sustainable for the future.
