Abtisam Mohamed MP has welcomed the completion of a new playground at Firth Park following years of campaigning, consultation and fundraising by residents and community volunteers.
The Labour MP for Sheffield Central returned to the park at the invitation of the Friends of Firth Park to see children enjoying the completed facilities.
Mohamed was serving as a local councillor when the first consultation on refurbishing the playground was held in 2021.
The project was developed alongside the Friends of Firth Park after a group of parents contacted their local representatives to call for improved facilities for their children.
The consultation sought residents’ views on creating a playground with better equipment and an environment that felt safer, more modern and properly maintained.
After several years of consultation, committee discussions and funding bids, the completed playground is now open for local children and families to enjoy.
Reflecting on the project, Mohamed said:
“This morning the Friends of Firth Park invited me back to see it finished. After years of consultation, committees and funding bids, standing there watching children playing in the new playground was lovely.”
She thanked everyone who helped turn the community’s ambition into reality, including local volunteers, the Friends of Firth Park and Sheffield City Council.
Mohamed added:
“A huge thanks to the Friends of Firth Park, all local volunteers and those at Sheffield City Council for helping to make this happen.”
The completed refurbishment demonstrates the important role that residents and voluntary organisations can play in improving their neighbourhoods when they work closely with local councillors and public authorities.
It also represents the successful delivery of a project first shaped by parents who wanted better opportunities for children in their community.
The new playground will provide a safer and more welcoming space where children can play, families can meet and residents can enjoy one of Sheffield’s valued public parks.
Mohamed’s return to Firth Park marked the culmination of work that began during her time as a councillor and continued after her election to Parliament, delivering a lasting improvement for local families.
