Dear Labour Home team,

I'm Chris Waters and I’m reaching out to you from the office of Peter Swallow MP.

Please find a pitch below that we think could work for Labour Home. Hooked to the recent Curriculum and Assessment Review, the piece calls for more humanities education in schools and the need to reform the EBacc. It’s written by Peter Swallow MP for Bracknell, former classics scholar and teacher.

WORKING TITLE: Want a skilled workforce in the age of AI? Then it’s time to double down on humanities education

As the UK strives to become a global tech hub it needs a workforce that can both innovate and ethically control our use of technology. While there has been an uptick of focus on STEM subjects, Peter argues that humanities education in the UK needs to be boosted to ensure that students are given a fully rounded education that sets them up for the modern world.

One way to achieve this is reforming the Ebacc, a Gove-era reform that reduced students' ability to choose more than one humanities subject.

Better humanities education will not only equip students with essential skills that will turbocharge their careers, it will also help them navigate the information overload era that we are in.

The hit Netflix programme Adolescence has shown the dangers of social media influence, this op-ed also argues that students need humanities in order to distil fact from fiction in the online world.

Please find attached a first draft op-ed, we’re of course open to your thoughts & edits.

Best wishes,

Chris Waters,

Communications Officer
