Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has welcomed confirmation that 4G and 5G coverage will reach the whole Underground network by the end of 2026.

The expansion means Londoners will increasingly be able to make calls, send messages and use mobile data while travelling through stations and tunnels across the capital.

Writing on X, Khan said:

“Good news: by the end of 2026, Londoners will be able to enjoy 4G and 5G coverage across the whole London Underground network.”

The rollout has been expanding steadily across the Tube in recent years, with central sections and a growing number of stations and tunnels already connected. TfL says around 60 per cent of underground stations now have coverage, and that the whole network remains on track to be connected by the end of the year.

The programme is intended to improve the everyday experience of travelling in London, allowing passengers to stay connected for work, access travel information and contact friends and family while underground.

It also forms part of a wider push by City Hall and Transport for London to modernise the capital’s transport infrastructure and improve digital connectivity across the network. The Independent reported that TfL is aiming for mobile coverage at every Underground station by the end of 2026.

For businesses and workers, better mobile coverage is expected to make journeys more productive, while visitors will have easier access to maps, booking information and other digital services while using the Tube.

The completion of the rollout by the end of this year will mark a significant change for a network where mobile connectivity was once unavailable across large stretches of underground travel.

Khan has repeatedly argued that investing in London’s transport infrastructure is essential to maintaining the capital’s competitiveness and supporting economic growth.

With full 4G and 5G coverage now expected across the Underground by the end of 2026, millions of passengers are set to benefit from a more connected Tube network.
