PM reaffirms UK’s support for Ukraine in call with European leaders
The Prime Minister has reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to supporting Ukraine during a call with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, European leaders and the NATO Secretary General.
The discussion took place on Friday evening, following President Zelenskyy’s visit to the White House earlier in the day.
According to Downing Street, the leaders restated their “unwavering commitment” to Ukraine in the face of continuing Russian aggression. They agreed that a just and lasting peace was the only way to end the conflict permanently.
Talks also focused on how to continue supporting Ukraine both before and after any potential ceasefire. Further discussions are expected to take place later this week, including during a planned meeting of the so-called Coalition of the Willing.
After the wider call, the Prime Minister held a separate bilateral conversation with President Zelenskyy. He told the Ukrainian leader that Russia’s “stalling tactics” ahead of peace negotiations had shown that Ukraine remained the “serious party of peace”.
The Prime Minister said the UK would continue to step up humanitarian, financial and military assistance to help Ukraine prepare for the winter months.
Downing Street said the two leaders agreed to remain in close contact.
