Peter Prinsley, Labour MP for Bury St Edmunds and Stowmarket, shared a photograph of the campaigning team and said he had been out supporting Abdi-Wali’s bid to represent the constituency.

The group pictured included Labour Party general secretary Joe Fortune, MPs Tan Dhesi, Laura Kyrke-Smith and Sam Carling, alongside many volunteers. Fortune became Labour’s general secretary in September.

Making the case to residents

Prinsley described meeting residents, listening to their views and making the case for Abdi-Wali and the future she wants to build for the constituency.

Abdi-Wali is the leader of Camden Council and has represented Camden Square since 2022. Before becoming leader, she served as the council’s cabinet member responsible for housing.

Abdi-Wali: ‘This place welcomed my family as refugees’

Her campaign emphasises her experience serving the community that welcomed her family as refugees, including her work as a councillor, school governor and community activist.

“This place welcomed my family as refugees and gave us hope when we needed it most,” she said in Labour’s announcement of her candidacy.

The by-election follows Keir Starmer’s resignation as MP. Residents will choose their next representative on Thursday 8 October, with polling stations open from 7am until 10pm.
