Labour Home is preparing to launch its first nationwide reader polls to gauge opinion on government frontbench performance and future Labour leadership in the capital.
The two-part survey will invite readers, party activists and constituents to vote on two questions: their favourite member of the Labour Cabinet, and a preferred candidate for Mayor of London if Sadiq Khan decides against standing for a fourth term.
Favourite Labour Cabinet member
The first poll aims to assess grassroots support for key ministers serving in Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s administration, as set out when he unveiled his first Cabinet. Readers will be able to vote for figures across the frontbench who are shaping national policy, including:
- Louise Haigh MP — First Secretary of State and Cabinet Office
- John Healey MP — Chancellor of the Exchequer
- Ed Miliband MP — Foreign Secretary
- Shabana Mahmood MP — Home Secretary
- Wes Streeting MP — Defence Secretary
- Yvette Cooper MP — Health and Social Care Secretary
- Angela Rayner MP — Housing, Communities and Local Government Secretary
- Alex Norris MP — Justice Secretary
- Lucy Powell MP — Education Secretary
- Lisa Nandy MP — Culture, Media and Sport Secretary
- Miatta Fahnbulleh MP — Energy Security and Net Zero Secretary
The next Labour candidate for Mayor of London
While Sadiq Khan continues to lead City Hall, debate has grown over potential successors should he step aside ahead of the next mayoral election. Labour Home is compiling a shortlist of prominent London Labour figures and possible high-profile contenders, including:
- Dr Rosena Allin-Khan MP (Tooting)
- Dawn Butler MP (Brent East)
- Stella Creasy MP (Walthamstow)
- Florence Eshalomi MP (Vauxhall and Camberwell Green)
- Emily Thornberry MP (Islington South and Finsbury)
- Idris Elba (actor, campaigner and anti-knife crime advocate)
The names are a starting shortlist for the forthcoming poll, not a declaration that any of those listed has entered a selection contest.
Suggest names before the polls open
Before the polls officially go live, Labour Home is inviting readers to suggest additional Cabinet ministers or London figures they want included on the ballot.
