Labour MP Joe Powell has praised the enduring importance of Notting Hill Carnival as it marks 60 years, describing the event as one of the clearest expressions of London’s diversity, culture and community spirit.
The Kensington and Bayswater MP said the Carnival remained a powerful reminder of the capital’s strengths and thanked Mayor of London Sadiq Khan for providing additional funding to help ensure this year’s event could be delivered safely.
Writing on X, Powell said:
“Few events capture the spirit of London better than Notting Hill Carnival & 60 years later it remains a powerful reminder that diversity is the capital’s greatest strengths.”

The intervention followed Khan’s own tribute to the Carnival, which he described as “one of the world’s greatest celebrations of Caribbean culture, community & London”.
This year marks six decades since the modern Notting Hill Carnival first took shape, growing from a community celebration rooted in Britain’s Caribbean population into one of Europe’s largest street festivals. Organisers said the 60th anniversary had been a celebration of that legacy, with extra stewarding and crowd management freeing the police to focus on public safety.
For Powell, the anniversary is about more than the scale of the event itself. It is also a reminder of the role culture can play in bringing people together and shaping London’s identity.
The Carnival has long had particular importance in west London, where generations of Caribbean families helped build the communities from which the event grew.
Powell’s comments also underline Labour’s support for maintaining the Carnival as a major public celebration while ensuring organisers, police, councils and City Hall have the resources needed to keep it safe and accessible. Labour Home reported earlier on City Hall’s extra £4.6 million safety investment.
Khan has consistently defended the importance of Notting Hill Carnival and argued that its cultural contribution should be celebrated rather than diminished.
For Powell, the 60th anniversary offers a chance to recognise that legacy while looking ahead to the Carnival’s future.
His message was clear: Notting Hill Carnival remains not only a celebration of Caribbean culture, but also a symbol of a diverse, confident and inclusive London.
