Uxbridge and South Ruislip MP Danny Beales has welcomed changes to the 16–17 Saver railcard that extend half-price rail travel to thousands of young Londoners as they move into work, apprenticeships or higher education.
Under updated terms that took effect on 17 August, the 16–17 Saver now remains valid for a full calendar year from the date of purchase, rather than automatically expiring on the cardholder’s 18th birthday. Young commuters who buy or renew shortly before turning 18 can continue to get 50% off most standard peak, off-peak, advance and season tickets through their 18th year. Highlighting the cost-of-living boost for young residents, Beales said:
“Half-price travel is now available to thousands more young Londoners following changes to the 16-17 Saver railcard!
“The railcard now runs for a full year from the date of purchase rather than expiring at 18 — meaning an estimated 10,300 young people in London will benefit.”
Cutting transport costs for young commuters
The Department for Transport said previous rules left more than 70,000 students a year on average £175 worse off than their peers. Beales said the change will benefit an estimated 10,300 young people across London.
Key benefits of the updated 16–17 Saver include:
- 50% discount on rail fares: a half-price reduction on most National Rail journeys, including season tickets.
- Full-year validity: remains active for 12 months from purchase, bridging the gap for 18-year-olds entering university or starting early careers.
- Household savings: eases pressure on families supporting young adults through education and vocational milestones.
Supporting mobility and youth opportunity
Beales said reducing travel costs is crucial to expanding access to regional employment hubs, vocational training centres and educational institutions across outer London and the capital.
The extension aligns with government efforts to cut the cost of travel for young workers and encourage sustainable public transport use among the next generation.
