Marra was elected Scottish Labour leader on Saturday after defeating Joe Fagan with 63.2% of the vote, succeeding Anas Sarwar following Labour’s poor showing at the Scottish Parliament election in May.

Burnham said:

“Congratulations @michaeljmarra! Lots to do and I know you’ll give it everything you’ve got.

Looking forward to working closely together to bring back hope in Scotland.”

Marra promises to rebuild Scottish Labour

In his own message following the result, Marra said:

“It’s the honour of my life to be elected Scottish Labour leader. Together we will rebuild our party by reconnecting with the country and rediscovering our moral purpose.”

That language echoes the argument Marra made throughout the leadership contest: that Scottish Labour needs not simply a change of leader, but a broader renewal of its organisation, political offer and relationship with communities across Scotland.

He has said the party must become more rooted in communities, put jobs and workers at the heart of its energy policy, rebuild education as a central Labour cause and take stronger action on child poverty and public services.

Clear victory in leadership ballot

Marra entered the contest with strong support from Scottish Labour parliamentarians and constituency parties.

Official party records show he was backed by a wide range of MPs and MSPs, as well as affiliates including ASLEF, Community, the NUM, Scottish Labour Students and Scottish Young Labour.

The ballot opened on 28 August and closed on 17 September, with the result announced on Saturday.

Major rebuilding task ahead

Marra takes charge after Scottish Labour returned just 17 MSPs at the May Holyrood election, its worst result of the devolution era.

He has acknowledged that the party needs to reconnect with working-class voters and make a clearer case for Labour values if it is to rebuild its electoral position.

That creates an important relationship between the new Scottish leader and Burnham’s UK Government, with Marra likely to seek both cooperation and room to develop a distinctive Scottish Labour voice.

Burnham signals close partnership

Burnham’s intervention makes clear that Downing Street wants a constructive relationship with the new Scottish Labour leadership.

His reference to “bringing back hope in Scotland” also mirrors Marra’s own emphasis on renewal rather than simply managing the party’s current position.

With the leadership contest now over, the focus shifts to whether Marra and Burnham can work together to rebuild Labour’s support in Scotland while giving the Scottish party the distinct identity it needs to reconnect with voters.
