Labour MP Adam Jogee has taken his campaign for safer roads around schools to Parliament, introducing proposals that would require local authorities in England to prepare and publish a road safety plan for every school in their area.
The Newcastle-under-Lyme MP brought forward his Road Safety Plans Bill as Parliament returned following the summer recess, building on a campaign he has already been pursuing locally in Staffordshire.
Writing on X, Jogee said: “Parliament is back and I am taking my Road Safety Plans Bill to the House later today.”
The proposal was presented through a Ten Minute Rule motion and would require councils to prepare and publish a road safety plan for each school in their area.
Jogee has argued that parents, pupils and communities should have confidence that risks around school entrances and surrounding roads are being properly assessed and acted upon.
His local campaign follows concerns raised by parents, teachers and residents across Newcastle-under-Lyme, including after a serious collision outside Meadows Primary School in Madeley, and a petition calling on Staffordshire County Council to develop a dedicated road safety plan for each school in the county.
Labour MPs back Jogee’s campaign
The Bill has already won support from Labour colleagues.
Dr Allison Gardner, the Labour MP for Stoke-on-Trent South, welcomed Jogee’s proposals and highlighted the devastating consequences road accidents around schools can have for families and communities.

Her intervention underlines the wider relevance of Jogee’s proposals beyond his own constituency, with road safety around schools a concern for communities across the country.
The principle behind the Bill is straightforward: every school community should know what measures are in place to keep children safe on surrounding roads and what further action may be required.
Jogee has also repeatedly pressed for greater investment in local roads and improvements to road safety across Newcastle-under-Lyme and Staffordshire, including on the A500 Audley slip road.
His latest Bill moves that campaigning onto the national stage, focusing specifically on preventative measures around schools rather than waiting for serious incidents before action is taken.
For Jogee and the Labour MPs supporting his campaign, the aim is to give councils a clearer responsibility to identify dangers, plan improvements and ensure parents and children can travel to and from school more safely.
Bringing the Bill before Parliament represents another step in Jogee’s sustained campaign to make safer roads a priority both in Staffordshire and across the country.
