Wendy Alexander resigns

Wendy Alexander has today resigned her position as Leader of Labour in the Scottish Parliament.

Announcing her resignations, Mrs Alexander said:
"My pursuers have sought the prize of political victory with little thought to the standing of the parliament. Some may feel they have achieved a political victory but wiser heads will surely question 'at what price?'
It is clear that vexatious complaints will continue to dominate the headlines as long as I remain Labour's Scottish Parliamentary Leader.
"I cannot ask Labour supporters in Scotland for further forbearance."

Cathy Jamieson MSP has assumed all the responsibilities of the leader of the Labour Group of the Scottish Parliament until the normal procedures for electing a new leader are concluded.
Jamieson said:

"Ever since this process began anybody who knows Wendy Alexander has not for one minute questioned her integrity as is evident today.  With this decision she has put the Scottish Parliament and the Labour Party above her own interests.

"However there are far wider issues that have been raised and it is not just about Wendy Alexander and the Labour Party but Parliamentary process.

"Wendy Alexander followed the code of conduct, sought advice from Parliament and received unambiguous legal advice.  Subsequently the Standards Commissioner decided this advice was wrong and the Standards Committee then penalised her for following the advice of the parliamentary authorities. This has profound implications for all MSPs.
"Wendy Alexander has set up the platform for Labour to reconnect with the people of Scotland and we will be taking forward
this agenda over the summer and beyond."

Re: Wendy Alexander resigns as Leader (#1)

So, when does the leadership election process begin? Who are the potential candidates?

Re: Wendy Alexander resigns as Leader (#2)

The procedures committee of the Scottish Labour party will meet next week to discuss a timetable for the election.

Re: Wendy Alexander resigns as Leader (#5)

If she'll do it then Cathy Jamieson seems best placed to unite the party and take the SNP head on.

Re: Wendy Alexander resigns as Leader (#6)

I hope there's a proper election with a good range of candidates.

I like Cathy Jamieson, though I've been disappointed by her recent career.  She was impressive in her NEC days.

Personally, I think Elaine Smith would make a very good candidate; I don't know if she has any intention of standing, but I'm sure she would get a lot of support if she did.

Re: Wendy Alexander resigns as Leader (#7)

Didn't she try and stand before but it was the same story as McDonnell v. Brown? Or am I just getting confused...

How do Scottish Labour elect leaders?

Re: Wendy Alexander resigns as Leader (#9)

Yes, she fell two short, re: nominations I understand.

It's a similar process to the national one - only MSPs nominate (obviously there are fewer of them so I think it's 6 MSPs that are required).  Then the election involves MSP, party members, trade unionists and affiliates.

Equinas, below, goes for a personal attack, but Elaine Smith had the guts to try and ensure a contest last time round and it is SO necessary.  Scottish Labour can't afford to keep having unelected leaders come and go.  It was also a massive mistake to 'crown' Brown.

It's time to involve everyone in shaping the future of the party, north of the border - and here as well.

Re: Wendy Alexander resigns as Leader (#12)

Hopefully they will not replicate the coronoation process. It's dangerous and will hopefully never happen again.

Re: Wendy Alexander resigns as Leader (#13)

I don't see Cathy as popular with the populace.  My guess at the other frontrunners would have to be Andy Kerr, Margaret Curran, David Whitton and Lewis Macdonald - with Andy and Margaret as the favourites.  They're the only two with the smarts and the personality to take Alex Salmond on.

Re: Wendy Alexander resigns (#3)

Just shows the mess labour are in over these dam donations, but she at least went to save our beloved Brown, (yes I'm joking.)

Re: Wendy Alexander resigns (#4)

Can the rules be set to limit campaign expenditure to a very modest amount? Not allow any before the nominations are closed? But to send any candidates' statements out in a standard form and en masses as NEC elections, building society elections, etc etc

Spending £30,000 or even in UK case £150,000 a head on an internal party election is CRAZY. Let's stop it before it starts.

Re: Wendy Alexander resigns (#10)

If we had a proper system for people to communicate with electors in party elections then there would be less need to spend money campaigning.  The present system is a recipe for corruption.  If you know the right people you can get lists of CLP secretaries and the like.

Re: Wendy Alexander resigns (#8)

Did someone say Elaine Smith as leader???!!  Have you met her?

She wouldn't even get nominations from fellow travellers!  You need 6 nominations, her politics are so splitist i douby she could even muster her own!

Re: Wendy Alexander resigns (#11)

"Splitist"?
 Please elaborate.
